It is a chance to do your thesis in a collaborative setting, surrounded by people who are happy to share what they know. Background Mobile apps have always been designed for human users. But AI agents are increasingly being asked to use apps on people's behalf, completing bookings, filling forms, changing settings and retrieving information. Most apps were never built with this in mind. Being operable by an agent is becoming a product requirement, much like being findable by a search engine once was. We do not yet have a clear picture of what makes an app agent-ready, which control surfaces work best, or what properties of an interface determine whether an agent can operate it at all. In this thesis project, you will define a benchmark of realistic user tasks across one or more mobile apps and evaluate how reliably AI agents can complete them through different control surfaces: reading the app's accessibility tree, working from screenshots, or using explicitly declared capability interfaces. What you will do Some potential tasks within this thesis include: Defining a benchmark of realistic user tasks such as completing a booking, changing a setting, filling a form, or retrieving specific information Evaluating agent performance across three control surfaces: accessibility-tree navigation, vision-based control from screenshots, and declared capability surfaces such as App Intents or App Actions Measuring task completion rate, steps taken versus optimal, latency and token cost per task, and recovery from mistakes Documenting failure modes such as getting stuck, acting on the wrong element, or completing the wrong task Identifying what makes an app easy or hard for an agent to operate, from accessibility labelling to custom components and modal flows Recommending which actions an agent should be able to take on its own, and which should require the user to confirm Who you are This thesis may suit you if you: Are interested in mobile development, HCI, or AI agents Are curious about how apps need to evolve as AI agents become a new category of user Enjoy building benchmarks, running structured experiments, and drawing out practical implications Plan to start your master's thesis project in January 2027 Have the opportunity to work from our Stockholm studio About Framna Framna means ‘to bring forward’ in Old Norse. Thesis topic: Generative UI in Native Apps
Are you a final-year master’s student looking for a thesis project that blends real-world impact with cutting-edge tech? At Framna, we are passionate about creating digital products that shape markets and make everyday life better - and we want you to be part of it. Every year, we welcome a group of master’s students into our Stockholm studio to spend their final semester with us. You will sit alongside our developers, designers, testers, analysts, and product delivery leads, get a place to sit in our cozy office, and join our social and learning activities - from lunch-and-learns to our weekly Friday demos and AWs. It is a chance to do your thesis in a collaborative setting, surrounded by people who are happy to share what they know. Background Generative UI is when a large language model assembles an app's interface at runtime, rather than a developer hardcoding it. As apps take on more open-ended requests, a fixed set of screens covers less of what users ask for. Protocols for letting a model decide what to render are starting to emerge. But giving a model control over what gets rendered raises hard questions: how much freedom the model should have, what happens when its output is invalid, inconsistent, or misleading, and what the approach costs in latency, reliability, and safety. In this thesis project, you will implement the same native app feature under several different model-to-interface contracts, ranging from tightly constrained to fully generative, and empirically compare how each performs across dimensions that matter in real products. What you will do Some potential tasks within this thesis include: Implementing a native app feature under three types of model-to-interface contracts Evaluating each approach on schema validity rate, component appropriateness, consistency across repeated requests, and latency to first render Measuring token cost per rendered screen and assessing design system conformance and visual drift Identifying failure modes and testing graceful degradation when model output is invalid Investigating safety risks, including whether generated interfaces can be steered toward misleading or harmful outputs Producing a taxonomy of failure modes and architectural guidance for where on the constrained-to-open spectrum a given feature belongs Who you are This thesis may suit you if you: Are interested in mobile development, design systems, or AI systems Are curious about the architectural and product implications of AI-generated interfaces Enjoy building prototypes and designing structured empirical comparisons Plan to start your master's thesis project in January 2027 Have the opportunity to work from our Stockholm studio About Framna Framna means ‘to bring forward’ in Old Norse. Thesis topic: A Capability Benchmark for On-Device AI Models
Background AI is moving onto your device. On-device models can run without an internet connection, and keep data private. But their capabilities are still poorly understood compared to their cloud-based counterparts. For product teams building mobile apps, the key question is not just how good these models are in isolation, but what they are actually useful for. When is an on-device model good enough and where does it fall short? In this thesis project, you will design and run a structured benchmark study of on-device AI models across realistic tasks, producing a capability map that product teams can use to make informed decisions about when to run AI locally, in the cloud, or as a combination of both. What you will do Some potential tasks within this thesis include: Designing a benchmark covering realistic tasks such as summarisation, classification, intent detection, structured extraction, image understanding, OCR, and visual search Evaluating on-device language models and vision or multimodal models against a cloud-based frontier model as a quality reference point Assessing each model across dimensions including accuracy, task completion rate, latency, memory usage, battery impact, hallucination rate, and robustness to messy input Including product-facing metrics such as user-perceived quality, privacy sensitivity, and failure detectability Exploring deployment stacks such as Apple's Foundation Models framework or ExecuTorch, and building on existing benchmarks such as MobileAIBench and PalmBench Producing a categorization of tasks where on-device models perform well, poorly, or inconsistently, and a decision framework for choosing between local, cloud-based, and hybrid AI Who you are This thesis may suit you if you: Are interested in mobile development, edge AI or mobile computing Are curious about how AI capabilities translate into real product decisions Enjoy designing experiments and building evaluation frameworks Plan to start your master's thesis project in January 2027 Have the opportunity to work from our Stockholm studio About Framna Framna means ‘to bring forward’ in Old Norse. Thesis topic: Human vs. AI Code Review in Pull Requests
Background Code review is a cornerstone of modern software development - a practice that catches bugs, spreads knowledge, and upholds quality standards across a team. As AI-powered code review tools become increasingly capable, questions arise about how their feedback compares to that of experienced human reviewers. Do AI tools catch the same types of issues as humans? Where do they add the most value, and where do they fall short? And how can they be designed to complement, rather than replace, the human perspective in a review workflow? In this thesis project, you will conduct an empirical study comparing human and AI-generated code review comments on real pull requests. The goal is to produce a nuanced understanding of the complementary strengths of each, and to generate practical recommendations for how AI review tools can best support development teams. What you will do Some potential tasks within this thesis include: Collecting a dataset of pull requests with existing human review comments Generating AI review comments for the same pull requests using one or more code review tools or LLM-based systems Developing a structured coding scheme to categorise review comments - for example by correctness, security, performance, readability, architecture, naming, test coverage, edge cases, documentation, and domain-specific concerns Analysing whether human and AI comments address the same parts of the code and identify the same types of problems Combining quantitative analysis, such as comment category frequency and overlap, with qualitative analysis including expert evaluation of usefulness, accuracy, severity, and actionability Producing a classification of review comment types, an annotated dataset, evaluation metrics, and recommendations for how AI review tools should support human reviewers Who you are This thesis may suit you if you: Are interested in software engineering, empirical research methods, or human-AI collaboration Are curious about the role of AI in developer workflows and code quality Enjoy reading and reasoning about code across different languages and domains Plan to start your master's thesis project in January 2027 Have the opportunity to work from our Stockholm studio About Framna Framna means ‘to bring forward’ in Old Norse. Thesis topic: Analysing Table Tennis with AI Vision
Background Sports analytics is a rapidly growing field, and table tennis presents a particular challenge: its fast pace, small ball, and complex tactical patterns make automated video analysis both technically demanding and practically valuable. Current approaches to sports video analysis are dominated by task-specific computer vision pipelines with specialised models for object tracking, pose estimation, and event detection. Now Vision-language models (VLMs) offer a less explored alternative. As language models, they can be asked open-ended questions about a scene without being trained for the task first. Whether that suits something as fast and data-heavy as match footage is untested. What you will do Some potential tasks within this thesis include: Implementing and evaluating a computer vision approach using tools such as OpenCV, MediaPipe, or YOLO-style object detection to analyse match footage including for example tracking, pose estimation, and event detection Testing one or more vision-language models to analyse that same match footage to compare to the baseline of the computer vision approach Testing one or more vision-language models to analyse match footage and extract tactical insights, player behaviour, and rally patterns Exploring a hybrid approach that combines structured computer vision and multimodal AI interpretation Manually annotating a small dataset to serve as ground truth for evaluation Evaluating each approach on tasks such as rally segmentation, serve detection, shot rhythm, score tracking, and tactical pattern recognition Presenting findings including a prototype analysis tool, a small annotated benchmark dataset, evaluation metrics, and design recommendations for future sports analysis apps Who you are This thesis may suit you if you: Are interested in computer vision, machine learning, or multimodal AI Are curious about applying AI to sports analytics and real-world performance data Enjoy working with video data and building evaluation pipelines Plan to start your master's thesis project in January 2027 Have the opportunity to work from our Stockholm studio About Framna Framna means ‘to bring forward’ in Old Norse.
