Thesis Proposal - Sensor Health & Edge Anomaly Detection for Industrial IoT
Do you want to explore the intersection of TinyML, embedded signal processing, and real-time sensor health diagnostics? Sensors operating in harsh production environments face extreme conditions such as dirt, vibration, and mechanical wear, often leading to subtle sensor drift and degraded data quality long before a complete failure occurs. In this thesis, we invite one or two students to develop and evaluate lightweight anomaly detection algorithms that execute directly on resource-constrained microcontrollers (Edge/TinyML). The goal is to analyze signal health patterns in real time at the sensor level, flagging data quality issues before bad data reaches downstream systems. About the project The aim is to design, implement, and evaluate an edge-based self-diagnosing sensor system capable of automated drift and defect detection. Within this scope, you will: Work with industrial time-series datasets (such as the NASA Turbofan degradation dataset) and model realistic sensor fault profiles. Develop lightweight anomaly detection and signal-processing algorithms in Python and optimize them in C/C++ for microcontroller deployment. Implement real-time inference on resource-constrained hardware (e.g., ARM Cortex-M or similar microcontroller platforms). Benchmark system performance in terms of detection accuracy, memory footprint, power efficiency, and the ability to distinguish sensor faults from true physical process anomalies. Possible Research Questions RQ1: Which lightweight anomaly detection algorithms provide the best trade-off between detection rate and computational resource efficiency when executing directly on a microcontroller? RQ2: How can edge-level algorithmic analysis effectively differentiate between true physical process anomalies and sensor-related fault modes (e.g., signal noise, connection degradation, or calibration drift)? Features & technologies TinyML & Embedded Systems (C/C++, TensorFlow Lite for Microcontrollers, Edge Impulse, Microcontrollers) Time-series Anomaly Detection & Signal Processing (Python, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, SciPy) Sensor health monitoring, drift analysis, and predictive maintenance Industrial time-series datasets (e.g., NASA Turbofan / C-MAPSS) Who are you?
Thesis Proposal - Pose based occupant monitoring for driverless buses: Privacy preserving detection of critical passenger events
Background As public transport moves towards driverless vehicles, in-cabin cameras are proposed to detect critical passenger events such as falls, medical emergencies and conflicts. However, continuous monitoring of passengers raises GDPR concerns, since raw footage is personal data and is costly to justify, store and protect under the regulations data minimization principle. To reduce the collection of personal data, passengers could be represented as skeleton points (pose estimation data) instead of raw video. This thesis examines whether skeleton data alone is sufficient to reliably detect passenger events and behaviors, as a way of making GDPR compliance easier to achieve. Work description Build a pipeline that extracts skeleton sequences from cabin video using an existing pose estimation model. Design and train a classifier that detects relevant passenger events from skeleton sequences alone. Collect or reuse labelled scenario data (open datasets and/or scripted recordings) reflecting realistic bus-cabin conditions. Benchmark detection accuracy and real-time latency against other detection models. Assess, using GDPR's data-minimization principle, what personal data the skeleton representation avoids collecting compared to conventional video. We think the thesis will contain the following parts, Literature review on pose-based activity/fall recognition and privacy-preserving video analytics. Design and implementation of the skeleton-extraction and event-classification pipeline. Empirical evaluation of accuracy, latency, and privacy exposure versus a conventional video based approach. Recommendations for how detection performance can be balanced against data minimization in this type of system. Qualifications Programming experience in Python. Understanding of machine learning and image processing techniques. Background in Computer Science, Data Science AI or equivalent. Good knowledge in Swedish and English, both in writing and speeking. Thesis Proposal - Vision-Based Passenger Fall and Abnormal Posture Detection for Autonomous Buses
Background Autonomous buses are designed to operate without a driver who can continuously observe the passenger compartment and respond to safety-critical situations. This creates a need for automated systems that can monitor passengers and identify potentially hazardous situations inside the vehicle. Recent advances in computer vision and deep learning enable human detection, tracking, pose estimation, and activity recognition. However, monitoring passengers inside a bus is challenging due to occlusions, limited camera viewpoints, varying illumination, crowded conditions, and diverse passenger postures. This thesis aims to develop and evaluate a vision-based system for detecting passenger falls and abnormal postures in autonomous buses. RGB cameras will be the primary sensing modality, while infrared, thermal, or depth cameras may also be investigated. Work description The thesis will investigate methods for: Passenger detection, tracking, and human pose estimation. Detection of falls and abnormal postures. Temporal analysis to distinguish abnormal events from normal movements. Robustness to multiple passengers, occlusions, different viewpoints, and illumination. Evaluation of accuracy, false positives/negatives, robustness, and processing latency The work will include a review of existing approaches, collection and analysis of representative passenger data, development and evaluation of the detection system, and validation under realistic autonomous-bus scenarios. Qualifications Programming experience in Python or C++. Knowledge of computer vision and machine learning. Interest in autonomous vehicles, public transportation, and passenger safety. Background in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mechatronics, or equivalent. Good knowledge in both Swedish and English, speaking and writing. Thesis Proposal - Structural Strength in 3D-Printed Objects
Background and Purpose 3D printing is becoming an increasingly important part of our business. As the use of additive manufacturing grows, so does the need to understand how different materials behave when exposed to forces from different directions. Understanding how components should be printed to achieve the desired properties under pushing, twisting, and pulling forces is essential for producing strong and reliable parts. We experience both advantages and challenges with this manufacturing method. Printing direction and print settings are crucial factors in achieving a successful part with high strength and good dimensional fit. In addition, the choice of material and infill structure can have a significant impact on the structural strength of the final component. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the breaking point of several materials under different printing setups. The conclusions from the study should provide a better understanding of how changes in material and printing parameters affect the structural strength of 3D-printed parts. The thesis will include: 3D printing of given and refined designs using different materials and printing setups. Physical tensile testing of each version. Comparison of structural strength between different materials and printing setups. Investigation of the relationship between infill structure and tensile strength. Analysis and evaluation of the test results. For a successful thesis project, we believe the applicants should have: An ongoing degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent Experience with CAD and a basic understanding of material selection. An interest in 3D manufacturing and physical testing. Experience with Excel and data point analysis. The ability to independently carry out literature studies, data analysis, and laboratory testing. Good knowledge in both Swedish and English, speaking and writing. To give you the best possible support during your thesis, we’d like you to be able to come to the office connected to the project and spend most of your time working from there. Application: We look forward to receiving your resume, and preferably, a personal letter in which you explain why you want to write your thesis with Syntronic.
